When duta Captain Maiel loses focus protecting a human child named Leena, she blames her inability to control her anger on the many incarnations she’s undergone to perfect her husband’s atman. Engrossed in the idea that she could have lost Leena to the enemy, Maiel returns home to succor her doubts. However, neither her children nor her human husband Dominic are able to offer comfort. Anger twines with fear as the King demands a review through his councils. Afraid of being cast from the legions, Maiel runs from her family to the wilderness of human reality, seeking safety from her torment. Once there, she only finds shadow and suffering.
On Earth, Maiel is pursued by relentless shadow forces set upon her by Morgentus, a Baron of Jahannam, who is determined to make her his own. The Baron plays the princes of Jahannam against one another, and their desire to weaken the leadership of Zion. Cleverly manipulating all involved, he puts into play a devastating plan that will break the back of his enemy and give him all he desires.
With Maiel’s feared fall from Zion, those who remain behind are forced to ask questions they’ve left ignored for centuries, which might tear their world apart. The King of Zion selects Dominic and Leena to retrieve Maiel from the brink. Travelling across Europe, the unlikely pair are equally dogged by shadow assassins. The trip reveals more than they bargained for, as Dominic begins to fall to the burning. It appears they will never reach their goal before Belial wins Maiel to his side and wages his war on Zion to break the gates and return to power over all existence.
